M.A.C.S. |
Apparently there was, and still is, a rifle shooting/marksmanship simulator used in US army boot camps called M.A.C.S., or Multi-Purpose Arcade Combat Simulator. The only time I remember hearing anything about it was in an old issue of Nintendo Power many years ago, where somewhere in the back of the magazine there was a tiny blurb about it. That is, until Vertigo 2099 released a ROM dump of this "game", which of course I downloaded and fired up in ZSNES. Unfortunately, as the NFO file stated, the game does not work with any emu (at least right now). This is because the program is meant for use with a special gun, and not the Super Scope (not surprising, the Super Scope has problems with accuracy and speed, Konami released their own light gun for use with their Lethal Enforcers games).

The M.A.C.S. unit used a modified M16A2 rifle, specifically made for this unit.
Above is a shot of someone using MACS. I ripped it
from Camp Ripley, MN
web site, the only pic I have ever found of the unit in action.
Unfortunately, I have no pictures of the M.A.C.S.
cartridge. I don't even know who made this, there is no copyright info
on
the title screen. If you have any more info, please let me know.
Jeremy P sent in the following info:
Earlier today, I had the opportunity to play with this system and found
it quite fun. First off, to share some information you may be curious of:
The game is 9 levels, with levels 1-3 being "practice" on various targets.
Levels 4-6 is practice on targets at different ranges (50, 100, 150, 200,
250, 300). Level 7 and 8 are the same but the targets are timed. Level 9
has 40 timed targets, much as one would see during a qualification range.
There are no bonus or fancy levels.
The cartridge is a standard SNES cartridge, with a sticker that says "MACS
basic rifle marksmanship program V1994.0" and is paired with a 13 inch TV,
and the rifleman needs to have the laser 7.5 feet from the screen. The
rifle is an exact m16a2 mockup, similar in size and weight. The weapon
gives no kick. it has the laser device mounted on the top of the weapon on
the barrel, below the front sight post.
Big thanks to Vertigo 2099 for the ROM and info, and
Jeremy P for additional info
