The Super 8 is a NES to SNES adapter, allowing you play your old 8bit NES games on your SNES, as well as Super Famicom games. This device plugs into the SNES via the cartridge port, and has three ports on top, one for SNES/SFC, one for NES and one for Famicom games. This device gets its power from the SNES; no separate power supply is needed. It costs about $59.95 new; you can purchase one from Multimedia 1. This adapter is has also been sold under the name "Tri-Star" (see box scans below).

There were several NES to SNES adapters announced by various companies, and I believe some were released, but the Super 8 is the most popular (if you know of any other NES to SNES adapters, let me know). This is one accessory that gamers have asked for since the release of the SNES; one of the first questions people had when the SNES was first announced was, "Will I be able to play my NES games on it?" Well, the Big N dismissed the notion of backwards compatibility, and an aftermarket adapter, replying "It would cost too much, and it would be cheaper to just buy a NES instead". True enough, I suppose, though Nintendo did release the Super Game Boy, a GB to SNES adapter a few years after, and the Super Game Boy did cost more than a new Game Boy. Geesh!

Thanks to H. Meun (hmeun@noord.bart.nl) for all of the Tri-Star scans.
