Super NES/Famicom Pirate Single Carts

Super NES/Famicom pirate stuff is quite rare, in the two and a half years this site has been around, I just found some pirate material to put up. This stuff is much rarer than NES/FC and Game Boy pirate on my site. Also, I do not believe any pirate SNES/SFC consoles exist. Anyways, here is what I have so far, if you have more, by all means, please send it in.

Donkey Kong Country

This is one of the first SNES/SFC pirate carts I have seen on eBay. The guy selling it was selling it as a legal Super Famicom cart, however, any true Nintendophile would easily identify this cart as a pirate. First, the label art is disproportional and cheezy looking, and second, and most obvious, Donkey Kong Country was called "Super Donkey Kong" in Japan. Doh! If you look at the back of the cart, you will see the label there is, in fact, a verbatum copy of what is on the back of a legal Super Famicom cart.

First thing one notices about this one, is that they misspelled "Pikachu", heh. A Pokemon game, surprising since there were no Pokemon games for the SNES. It is a side scroller, and probably a hack of another game. The screenshot above looks familiar, with that little monkey character, but I can't put a finger on it.

LOL, I really like this one, it is probably my favorite SNES pirate item to date. Just read the back of the box and get ready to laugh yourself silly. The little snippet on the back of the box, which gives you a brief synopsis of the game, at leats it does on legit cartridge boxes), was ripped directly from a review of the Sega Genesis version of the game! Not only that, but this game isn't very good, it says so right on the back of the box! Apparently no one at this pirate outfit spoke English, else they would have caught that, or maybe they just didn't care and figured no one would read it anyway. Less amusing but no less a dead giveaway this is a pirate cart (as if that text on the back didn't make it obvious enough!), is the Sega video game rating on the front of the box, this is the precursor to the modern ESRB rating, but this rating indicia was only used by Sega before the ESRB rating system (you can find about more about this on this page if you are interested). After viewing such a shoddy pirate product as this, I really wonder how some of these pirates ever manage to stay in business.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (1)

This is a hack of Speedy Gonzales - Los Gatos Banditos from Sunsoft, with Sonic (and Mario!) sprites added in (you can see screenshot above). Now, let's look at the label... well, as pirate carts have taught us all, that pic of Sonic was probably ripped from somewhere else (note the disproportionate drawing of Sonic, though it may be a scanning artifact). Also note that the "Sonic The Hedgehog" logo, as well as the "Super Nintendo Entertainment System" one, are cheezily done, and, if you look carefully, are not the same as the authentic ones. Actually, the "Super Nintendo" logo looks kinda like the logo on an unlicensed convertor box, which is designed to make it look like a licensed accessory. Anyways, since this cart is labeled "Super Nintendo", and it has the shape and design it does, it was probably intended for the European/PAL market.

This is a hack of an unknown game. In addition to Sonic, there is a Mario character as well. The box art, front and back, is a direct rip of the real Sonic The Hedgehog 3 box for the Sega Genesis, with "3" being changed to "4". Note that Sonic is holding up 3 fingers, indicating the third sequel. Guess the pirates were too lazy to add another finger, heh.

Hahaha! Did you know Super Punch Out!!! is "Only for Super Game"? Yep, says so right on the cart label. Pirates, gotta love their dumbass attempts to cover up what they do! (For the record, is there a "Super Game" SNES/SFC pirate clone?) There are other obvious flaws in the label art as well, namely that they cut and pasted the art off of somewhere (the manual or box?) and pasted it over a black background with the "Super Punch Out!!! logo crudley drawn (The "torn" Only For logo should also be all the way over to the right, and smaller). This cart was probably intended for the Asian SFC market, based in the shape and lockout chip inside, as it requires an adaptor to play on a PAL console)

I believe this is a hack of an actual game called Ronaldinho Soccer, with "1998" hacked in, but I can't be sure.

Street Fighter III

Wow, Street Fighter III! Well, not exactly, this is not a port of the arcade game SFIII, but simply SFII, with some modifications. It loads up with Street Fighter III as the title and when the CAPCOM logo makes that sound you can hear it but the actual CAPCOM logo has been removed! Heh. It all runs like the original Street Fighter II, the copyright logo at the bottom has been labeled as:
(C) Fighter III 1993
(C) Street Fighter III 1993
Therefore, it is obviously a pirate. Also note, in the Famicom piracy tradition, the label is a close-up section of the real SF2 label art, with some meaningless verbiage ("Super Version") on it. I also have a single pirate Famicom cart with a similar label,, but I believe they are unrelated in any way.

Tekken 2

This is the first "Hong Kong original" I have seen for the SNES, though there is a chance this is just a hack of another game. If it is, I don't recognize it. I think it is an original, unauthorized port of Tekken 2 for the SNES. Check out the screenshots above.

The game itself has only 6 characters and the game has no ending, bosses or secret characters. The fighters are: Lee, Jun, Kazuya, Yoshimitsu, Heihachi and Paul. The character graphics are good but in 2-D. For 1 or 2 players. Two game options: arcade and versus mode.In the option screen, you can choose the difficulty level, number of rounds and round time.
